The first time most people attend an AKC dog show, they're equal parts impressed and confused β handlers trotting through carpeted rings, judges evaluating with deliberate stillness, and a whole vocabulary of stacking, gaiting, and breed type. If you've recently acquired a purebred dog or simply been drawn to the sport, this guide will help.
What Is AKC Conformation?
Conformation evaluates purebred dogs against the written breed standard for their breed β not against other dogs directly, but against an ideal. It reflects the functional traits the breed was historically developed to perform.
How Dog Shows Are Structured
Dogs compete within their breed by age and status class (Puppy, Novice, Bred by Exhibitor, Open, etc.), separated by sex. Class winners compete for Winners Dog and Winners Bitch, who then compete against any Champions for Best of Breed. Breed winners advance to Group competition (Sporting, Hound, Working, Terrier, Toy, Non-Sporting, Herding), and the seven group winners compete for Best in Show.
What Judges Look For
Structure and proportion matching the breed standard, breed type (the qualities that make a breed look distinctly itself), correct movement revealed through gaiting, condition and presentation, and temperament that accepts hands-on examination by a stranger.
Getting Started
You'll need an AKC-registerable purebred dog, AKC registration (typically $30β$40), and a show lead β a satin slip lead in a color complementing your dog's coat is the most versatile first choice. The Norfie 36" satin conformation show lead collection offers eight colors matched to common AKC breed coats. Avoid thick leashes, retractable leads, or decorative collars in the ring.
Preparing Your Dog
Stacking: practice standing still for examination, including mouth, ears, and feet checks. Gaiting: practice a controlled trot in down-and-back, triangle, and L patterns. Handling classes through local kennel clubs are invaluable for ring training. Attend several shows as a spectator first to observe experienced handlers in your breed.
Show Day
Arrive 1β2 hours early. Grooming areas have tables, outlets, and water β bring your own grooming bag with comb, brush, show lead, and breed-specific tools. In the ring, follow the judge's instructions for the group movement and individual examination pattern. After judging β win or lose β watch the winners and try to understand what the judge rewarded.
Starter Equipment List
A 36" satin show lead matched to coat color, a portable grooming table, a fine and coarse comb like the Norrgroom 7.5" comb, breed-specific finishing tools, high-value bait treats, the show catalog, and comfortable shoes.
Finding Your Community
Local all-breed kennel clubs, breed parent clubs, the AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy program, and breed-specific forums and Facebook groups are the best resources for beginners.
